The Experimental Animal Center (EAC) of the University of Bern is a structural unit, which carries the responsibility for in vivo research. The EAC aims at providing optimal conditions for animal experimentation to achieve the best quality of basic, translational and clinical research involving animals. The 3Rs (Reduce, Refine, Replace), the “culture of care” and compliance to guidelines and regulations are cornerstones of the EAC strategy.

Distress monitoring GMO manager 100%
Area of responsibility
Your specific responsibility are the creation and management of data sheets for «genetically modified lines or mutants» (= GMO data sheets) and other forms within the framework of the legally required stress monitoring of GMO animals (in accordance with Art. 124 of the Animal Welfare Ordinance and Art. 12 the Animal Experiments Ordinance) as support with the animal management system. The position will report to the Head of EAC.
• Advice and support for researchers in correctly completing the GMO data sheets and form M
• Advice and support for researchers in creating nomenclature-compliant strain names
• Upload of completed documents to the animal management system
• Regular updates of the data sheets and forms M
• Regular checks via the animal management system on the status of the distress monitoring of the animal lines being investigated
• Regular controls in animal husbandry regarding the implementation of stress-reducing measures
• Regular communication with the Heads of EAC, Central Animal Facilities and Animal Welfare Officer
• Collaboration with the animal management responsible.
Ideally, you have a PhD and a degree in veterinary medicine or natural sciences/biology
• Further training/experience in the field of animal science
• Robust knowledge of genetic modifications and breeding in experimental rodents
• Experience in carrying out distress monitoring is an advantage
• Advanced knowledge and experience with animal management programs (e.g. Pyrat, e-rats). Proficient with Word and Excel office applications.
• You are a reliable, flexible, team player, well organized and service-oriented person with quick comprehension and independent, very careful, diligent way of working.
• Comfortable in English and German
• A 2 year position, with the possibility of prolongation
