Veterinary Surgeons

Position title: Veterinary Surgeons

Company name: University of Oxford

City: Oxford

Country: United-kingdom

Oxford University are seeking veterinary surgeons/NVS’s to join our team of vets at the Department of Biomedical Services. We have several vacancies and will consider candidates who wish to work part-time as well as full time. There is also potential for some flexible working. These positions are permanent contracts.

The core purpose of the University of Oxford’s Biomedical Services (BMS) is to provide for the care and welfare of animals in experimental research and in doing so we support the scientific community across the University. We are in effect an internal business with researchers as our customers.

At BMS we currently operate a hybrid veterinary/Named Veterinary Surgeon service whereby we have a mix of in-house and outsourced staff. We are now moving to a full in-house service over the next 18 months, and in doing so are building our internal veterinary team, with a clear remit that supports our researchers by providing the clinical expertise they need and similarly ensuring the way we care for our animals meets the legal compliance framework of the Animal (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986 (ASPA).

The first stage of changing the way we provide veterinary services to our University community and to our technical teams within BMS is to expand our internal veterinary team. In building the team, we are looking for people who appreciate the need to provide animal services for the advancement of medicine and medical breakthroughs. Our vets therefore have a core role to play in providing expert support and clinical procedural expertise not only to the University’s Principal Investigators and their research groups but also to our animal technicians at BMS.

As well as an excellent remuneration and benefits package, we will train our new vets who are not already Named Veterinary Surgeons to achieve NVS status, thereby enhancing not just your expertise but also your career opportunities. Once a NVS, the salary band will be increased to grade 9. We are just as interested in existing Named Veterinary Surgeons who would join us at a grade 9.

If you are committed to supporting animal welfare and the advancement of medical research and want to use your expertise within a world leading University, you can find out more by speaking to our Head of Compliance, Ellen Meek, who can tell you more about the work we do and the role you could play in delivering that work. Ellen can be reached on ellen.meek@bms.ox.ac.uk .

Due to the nature of the work, security screening of all applicants is carried out during the application process. Please contact the HR Assistant on personnel@bms.ox.ac.uk between 08:30 and 15:30 to obtain a unique reference number. Applications received without a unique reference number may not be considered.
